Celebrations of the 20th Anniversary of Armenia’s independence in Egypt

On September 22, 2011, an official reception took place at the Armenian Embassy in Cairo on the Occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Independence Day of the Republic of Armenia.
Among hundreds of guests were H.E. Dr. Amr Helmy, The Minister of Health of Egypt, the deputy ministers of foreign affairs, culture and education, , as well as heads and representatives of more than 70 countries' diplomatic missions and international organizations accredited to Cairo, the Foreign Ministry officials, famous businessmen, politicians, public figures, artists and journalists. Spiritual leaders of the Armenian Apostolic and Catholic communities in Egypt, leaders of diocesan and political assemblies in Cairo and Alexandria and members of the Armenian community had also came to congratulate on this occasion.
In his welcome speech Ambassador of Armenia in Egypt H.E. Dr. Armen Melkonian particularly mentioned independence as the realization of the Armenian nation’s centuries-old wish and dream, touched upon Armenia’s successes and achievements in the past 20 years, the current challenges, as well as the Armenian-Egyptian cooperation, placing importance on the role of the Armenian community in the strengthening of friendly ties between both countries.
During the reception three distinguished Egyptian-Armenians: Architect Nairy Hampikian, Sculptor Sarkiss Tossounian and Egyptologist Hourig Sourouzian were handed special Diploma of the Ministry of Culture of Armenia in recognition of the significant contribution in development and popularization of the Armenian culture. Ambassador Melkonian presented these awards on behalf of H.E. Hasmik Poghosian, Minister of Culture of the Republic of Armenia.
On September 21, Chief of the Supreme Council of the Egyptian Armed Forces, Field-Marshal Muhammed Husein Tantavi’s Personal Representative Mr. Karim El-Diwani visited the Armenian Embassy in Cairo where he transmitted to Armenian Ambassador Melkonyan the congratulatory remarks and wishes of the head of state to President Serzh Sargsyan and the friendly Armenian people. During the meeting, the sides expressed content with the current level of warm Armenian-Egyptian relations and mentioned that the traditional friendship and mutual respect between both nations lied at the core of those relations.
